Smith said he did not know Sternberg was planning to review the college until a university press release announcing Easton's resignation mentioned the initiative Thursday.
University of Wyoming law students seek answers after dean's resignation
Sternberg sent a letter to College of Law faculty on Oct. 28 informing them of the task force and asking for nominations. He said he envisioned the task force as being similar to the Governor's Energy, Engineering, STEM Integration Task Force, which, at the direction of Gov. Matt Mead, sought ways to propel UW's College of Engineering and Applied Science to a more competitive status.
Perhaps the Board of Trustees should convene a task force to evaluate their presidents lack of communication skills. How much effort does it take for the UW President to call up the Dean of the Law College and say what do you think? He may not agree with what the Dean says and he can do what he wants but at least he communicated what he believes and why. Sternberg wants the UW to develop leaders but he isn't being a very good example of a leader. Passionate views, pointed criticism and critical thinking are welcome. Sternberg has said his impetus to form the task force and steer its efforts toward evaluating the natural resources areas of law came from informal feedback he heard as he traveled the state.
"Undoubtedly, energy and natural resources are a significant part of Wyoming life," the students wrote. "While energy and natural resources focused courses are important for students wishing to pursue careers in those fields, they are not the sole focus or interest of all, or even most, students at the College of Law. The College of Law is the only law school in Wyoming, and as such is responsible for providing the necessary education to future lawyers so they can competently represent the people of Wyoming in all areas of the law."
law was not what it used to be when it came to educating lawyers on natural resources, water and environmental law and he was motivated to look into it further.

In a letter to UW President Bob Sternberg and Air Huarache Womens Red the university's board of trustees, the students questioned why Sternberg decided to focus his review on natural resources related areas of law, why the College of Law was not consulted during the decision, and why the university did not wait to initiate the task force until the results of a recent American Bar Association accreditation review were finalized.
workforce needs," Baldwin said, adding that those needs included attorneys familiar with areas of law needed in the oil and gas industry. Any increased emphasis on energy related areas of law would not reduce the college's course offerings in any other area, he said.
"Private industry has not and will not dictate the curriculum at the College of Law," Baldwin said.
UW Public Relations Director Chad Baldwin said an effort to study energy related areas of law at UW did not mean private industry was dictating the College of Law's curriculum, as students alleged in the letter.
Students expressed concern that the task force's focus on UW's performance in areas of law that relate to the energy industry including natural resources, water and

Like Loucks, Smith said he would be more accepting of a review of the College of Law had its students and faculty been consulted before the structure and focus of the task force were determined.
Sarah Beth Loucks, a third year UW law student who signed the letter to Sternberg, said the university president's lack of communication to students about his task force was disconcerting. Loucks said she would have been supportive of the effort had the decision to assemble a task force been a collaborative process between university leadership and the College of Law. The law school already offers an array of energy related courses, she said.

"There had been rumors [of a task force], but nothing was substantiated," Smith said. "I think the resignation really caught us by surprise."
Forty University of Wyoming law students wrote to university leadership Monday, decrying a recent administrative decision to assemble a task force to review the College of Law.

The students' open letter came four days after their dean, Stephen Easton, resigned amid the impending scrutiny of his department.
"The more information, the better," Smith said. "I'd be glad to participate in any sort of conversation that's willing to be had about the direction of the law school. . But there does need to be a dialogue moving forward with input from the faculty and the students currently enrolled."

Sternberg said his law school task force will include people from Wyoming and regional legal communities, the UW Faculty Senate, the UW College of Law and elsewhere.
