His daughter, Marian Callagher, said: "Before his death he asked for arrangements to be made for a memorial to his beloved parents and grandfather at St. Gabriel's Church. Reverend Ian Cook has been very helpful in guiding the process along. It is certain that he would be delighted to have had a part in restoring the inscription over the main arch in the church as a memorial."
Wilfred was born in Middleton Junction in 1919 and lived with his parents on Smethurst Street. During his childhood he was an altar boy and chorister at St Gabriel's Church before becoming an apprentice with AV Roe Aircraft.
Bill died peacefully in September 2005 but ensured a lasting legacy would be left to his family at St Gabriel's.
The couple married in 1943. Soon thereafter "Bill", as he became known in the RAF, returned to England for the remainder of the war. After the war ended, he and Minnie were reunited in England where they lived for nearly two years while he worked for AV Roe Company.
Marian said: "During World War II, he was aboard a troop ship bound for Singapore when the ship was redirected to Canada where he was assigned to an ocean reconnaissance unit, based in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. It was there that he met the love of his life, Minnie MacPherson."
