The University of Wyoming Literacy Research Center and Clinic will offer training for preschool through secondary teachers and literary education for education students, as well as help children who struggle to read.

One example would be a computer station that tracks eye movements while it records a student reading aloud. Software analyzes pronunciation and eye movements to help experts find out what problems the student might have, such as dyslexia or lacking fluency or vocabulary.
The center will be staffed by more than 15 UW faculty members in the College of Education and other academic units. Those include two Wyoming Excellence in Higher Education Endowed Chairs in Literacy Education, according to Persichitte. The center will hire one person to run the front desk and another part time employee to operate the technology.

"I think that we'll see quickly a rise and an increase in the collaborations and partnerships around the state with the center, in many different kinds of ways," said Kay Persichitte, dean of the College of Education at UW.
"If [students] can't read, they fall further and further behind every year, setting themselves up on a trajectory to becoming a high school dropout, and that trajectory leads to a lot of places we don't want to see our kids headed," Mead said. She added that some states predict prison populations based on third grade reading scores, because a high correlation exists between children who can't read and high school dropout rates.

Those services will be free for families, and officials plan to set up a fund to cover travel expenses, Persichitte said.

Teachers and struggling students can meet via video with UW literacy education experts, Persichitte said. When that's not enough, children can come to the center, where experts will use state of the art tools to diagnose the problem.
"The governor and I believe children are our greatest asset here in Wyoming. To the extent that we can secure for them a solid education, and know that they are lifelong learners with the ability to educate themselves for the rest of their lives, we have secured the future of this great state," Mead said.
Nearly all the initial $3.8 million needed for the building with technology capabilities has been raised, Mead said, adding they're continuing to raise funds for things like enhancing programs.
"As a society, we frequently don't pay enough attention to the importance of literacy," he said. Mead said the center will be able to not just disseminate programs statewide, but also connect literacy efforts already going on around the state. She said people have supported the project generously because they know literacy is important.
Ben Blalock, president of the University of Wyoming Foundation, gives much credit to Persichitte for having the vision to drive the agenda forward and called Mead's efforts a "game changer."
"I think that this will give us the tools to reach people all over the state who struggle with literacy issues," Wyoming first lady Carol Mead said. Known for her work with literacy and children's issues, Mead also was instrumental in raising funds and awareness for the project, according to UW officials.

Work will be funded by private donors matched by state appropriations. The center has also received several endowment gifts, according to a UW press release.
